Abstract

The field of life review, reminiscence, and life story work has expanded greatly since Robert Butler coined the term life review in the 1960s. Its growth reflects decades of dedication by researchers and practitioners exploring the power of personal narrative. This article highlights nine leaders whose vision and commitment have advanced the theory, practice, and spirit of life story work. Building on the legacies of Dr. Robert Butler and Dr. James Birren, founder of Guided Autobiography (GAB), these innovators have broadened access to methods that help people find meaning through story. Drawing on in-depth interviews, the article explores how the field has evolved, why it endures, and what guides its future.
